Real Bike
Posted On 02/11/08 @12:27:AM by TVoyager

Recently I received an IM from some one I didn't know and it simply said, "Why don't you get a real bike?"  Wow!  At first I was angered and thought this required an immediate reply, but good since prevailed and I did not.  Perhaps I left a comment on this persons page or image that they didn't appreciate and they were getting even with me, or maybe it was just good natured razzing.  It's hard to tell these things on the internet.  At any rate it was an IM so no one but me could have been offended and yet it got me to wondering.

What is a "real bike"?  Hmmm, that Victory Vision is cool, maybe it's a real bike.  Oh, and that Yamaha Raider is awesome, maybe it's a real bike.  My friends have all brands of bikes, Harley's, Honda's, Yamaha's, Suzuki's, Kawasaki's, and one even has a scooter, maybe I should ask them what a "real bike" is.  Do you think one of them could tell me?  I doubt it, or perhaps they would suggest the one they are riding is the "real bike".  Yeah, that's it.  The one you're riding is the "real bike".

The first thing any of us do when we get a motorcycle is customize and personalize to make it our "real bike".  So, friend, who ever you are, I'm riding a "real bike" and I'll bet you are too.  Have a good day.

Hey what about Triumph,BSA, Norton and some of the other British brands.I remember a day when most really cool choppers out there were running Brit motors.Hell if it was not for the Triumph Harlay would not have made the sportster back in the day.Thats right the first sportsters had everything on the British side. Why was that? Triumph was the fastest thing going and harley wanted a piece of it.How soon they forget. So if one of these "NEW AGE BIKERS" want to talk shit let them. They paid for the right by over paying to begin with.

I can't stand that "Real Bike" shit. I have owned almost every mfgr. out there - a motorcycle is a motorcycle. I've only heard Harley owners use the term "real bike" and to this I feel bad for them. These poor sheep are following a herd or an ideal that they do not understand. Harley's used to be the alternative to Henderson's or Indians...they were for those who didn't want to follow the pack. Now people feel like if they don't buy an HD they aren't bikers. What complete foolishness. I had a Suzuki 1500 Intruder, completely customized - not only did most Harley riders think it was a Harley (they did not notice the thing had a shaft drive?) but they inquired as to where I had the work done and how they could do it to theirs. When I told them what the bike was, they looked unsure of themselves and kinda looked around for another HD rider for reassurance. I teach the MSF course in 3 states and have put on somewhere between 500,000 and 600,000 miles on many different motorcycles. They are all different. They are all designed for a different body type and a different type of riding. STOP talking about what kind of bike is a REAL BIKE and learn how to ride any bike better, smoother and safer...That is MY challenge to you "real bikers" out there.

What you ride is not important, riding is ... Keep the shiny side up and feet down at stoplights.

A real bike has two wheels, a motor, a seat, and a way to steer.  Hopefully good brakes when needed!
