This is definitely a ride everyone should make at least once in their lifetime. We covered 3164mi R/T over 9 days from DFW to Page, AZ and back. Until our "next" big trip -- I believe this one remains in mine & the OMs thoughts constantly. Once you leave any major cities .. its just you & the low rumble of the V-Twin for miles on end. Solemn & peaceful.
The route we mapped out for the trip took us West to Van Horn, TX, then wound our way through Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Other cities along our route were Ruidiso, NM, Show Low, AZ; then west into Sedona, AZ. AZ-89A up through Oak Creek Canyon is a must if your out that way. Unless, of course, you dont like heights, 2-lane roads & no guardrails. LOL. Its a complete corkscrew straight to the top. From there we rolled into Flagstaff, AZ; then made our way over to visit the Grand Canyon. We set out North to Page, AZ from there. If any of you are photographers -- Lower Antelope Canyon is a dream come true. Jeep rides available everywhere to get you out there for a tour. When we decided to head for home we left Page and headed ESE down through the Hopi Indian lands of Tuba City, AZ. Word to the wise - the reservations, if you layover there, are all dry. Alcohol is about 45mi away in any direction. From Tuba City on to Silver City, NM then the last night on the road in Fort Stockton, TX. We took TX-118 from Alpine, TX to skirt the edge of Big Bend National Park before forcing ourselves to finally point the front tire for home. :)
